Where to look for Fossils Burnham-on-Crouch?

(The foreshore) - 2005

The best place to find fossils is along the foreshore. There are three main areas to look, the first is near to the base of the cliff and around the tide line. The second is within the fine shingle and the third is agmost the larger size rocks and pebbles at low tide.

(The Shingle) - 2005

Most of the fossils at Burnham are very small, you will need to get on your hand and knees to search the foreshore. Often, people will tell you that they make more finds by searching the 'beach shingle' than anywhere else. often people will take sieves down to the beach and sieve the fine shingles in the river, or take back bags of sieving at home. Fossils often can be found in this shingle as the sea washes the clay and they become trapped amongst the tiny gravels.

(Searching for larger finds) - 2005

For larger fossils, these are often found amongst the larger rocks and stone at low tide, although searching can be more difficult due to the foreshore being muddy and sometimes covered in seaweed. These fossils are washed down, too large to become trapped against the single, but small enough to be trapped around the rocks and larger pebbles.

(Search in areas where others may miss!) - 2005

Burnham is a very popular location, often areas such as those around trees and beach rubbish, slipwares or around the damaged concrete sea wall are all missed by people, if you take the time to move some of this beach obstacles around, you may well find fossils under them!
